""A story assembled from everyday objects, unassumingly and quietly, that stuns and horrifies by increments...The Canal may look, at first glance, like a love story, but it harnesses the power of parable." John Wray, author of Lowboy.

Dasein event . . .

What follows is a short film by one of my favourite writers and critics Steve Finbow:

"Things coalesced. Boning up on Heidegger while writing the short story “Event” and watching films from the No Wave gang while listening to the Lounge Lizards. I wanted to play around with the idea of words, pictures, and music, creating something that would jar the reader/viewer/listener’s familiarity with the world and how we perceive it. Heidegger had/has answers to the question (or at least an acute understanding of) why are we here – and he doesn’t usually get grouped with Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, and Francis Bacon. I also used images from Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer. The video footage is taken from a BBC documentary on Heidegger and the music is Hawkwind’s “You Shouldn’t Do That” from their In Search of Space album. The sampled “Dasein” is from an online pronunciation dictionary. The scrolled short story came about because I had the idea to use subtitles but the program on my Mac is not that great so I messed around with scrolling end-titles, stretched out the timecode and synched it to actual reading speed (around 180 words per minute) – and liked the result."
